Chapter Thirteen: Thunder Down Under

Alex wasn’t sure what to do first. Punch the guy in the face, or get Lea out of there. His smug, arrogant expression almost got him a bloody nose on top of that stained shirt he was wearing. But, what mattered to Alex more was taking care of Lea, so he chose to forgo the pleasure of watching that disgusting ass fall to the ground. He didn’t know who the guy was, or why he was grabbing on to Lea like that, but as soon as he heard her voice and saw the commotion, Alex knew it was time to intervene.

“Alex! Wha… what are you doing here?” Lea looked as if she were going to cry. Rubbing her arm, she asked, “How did you know I was here?”

“I didn’t. I’m staying here. At this hotel. I just came down to get a drink and was walking by the restaurant when I heard your voice.” Alex gently ushered Lea away from the other people and their stares. She looked so small and vulnerable right now.

“Do you want to talk about what happened?” It occurred to him that this might have been a date. “Do you know that man?”

Lea was still so upset that it was hard for her to talk.

“Look, why don’t we go up to my room. You’re in no condition to drive. You can have a glass of wine or a cup of tea and we can talk about it. Or we don’t have to talk about it. I can get the hotel to order us some breakfast.”

Lea laughed a bit through her tears. “It’s 8 pm, Alex.”

“Alex Elliott can do many things, Lea. Many things.” He was happy to see her smile weakly as he put his hand on her back protectively and guided her to the elevator.

As soon as they got to his room, she kicked off her shoes and sat cross-legged in an overstuffed armchair.

“Wine?” Alex offered, gesturing to the minibar. “We have tiny Chardonnay, tiny Cabernet, and tiny Champagne.” He held up each of the miniature bottles.

“Do you have any tiny vodka?”

“I do. I have all the tiny liquors you want” He’d gotten some ice earlier, so he cracked open the lid and made her a cocktail. “I say we drink all of the bottles. Added together, it might make one whole drink!”

Her hands were shaking a bit as she took the drink from him. “I don’t know why I’m so upset. The guy was just an ass. It’s not like he was going to throw me down on the ground and rape me in the middle of a seafood buffet.”

“Who was he?”

“His name is Thomas Rickman. He’s the head of…”

“Aceite Energy. Yes, I read about him. He’s trying to build a drilling site very close to the reef. My mother...Jane Teeley…was trying to stop it when she died.

Lea grinned. “You Googled her.”

“I did more than that, my dear. I read all afternoon. In fact…” he held his tiny rum and Coke up for them to clink in a toast, “I read a most interesting piece.
